Posts: 15Posted 20 years ago #Was just reading the thread 'I sampled Puts' and it got me thinking, how far do you guys take the sampling ethics thing, I mean most people on here seem to agree that sampling from MP3's is, and sounds, wack and CD's are not far behind. My question I suppose is how far do ou take this with vinyl?, I mean what about reissues? what about Dusty Fingers / Battle Breaks etc? lame? OK, I agree, what about 1970's compilations?, I have a few of these, are they still OK or are we exclusively looking for the original 7"? how about 1980's reissues or anthologies of 50's/60's jazz? where does it stop for you? -

Posts: 91Posted 20 years ago #for me, i dont have the money or the time to get originals, not only that but the real cats out there who have been digging for years have got all the good well know sh!t.
for me to start going out and buying what all my dj friends have already got in the way of breaks, is a waste of time and money. what i do is look for the breaks that people would miss. im in charity shops, old back ally record stores, bargin bins, car boot sales! these are where i get the best results.
sampling of MP3s is ok because it cuts corners, its about the creativity of what you do with your music, not how much you paid for it! i have more time to make good music because i dont dig for the classics. find your own! there is still a million funk 45s with breaks on that people aint got. those is what you should be looking for. a serious hip hop/breaks collector wont be impressed if the only breaks you can play him are one that he has got and had for years. -

Posts: 218Posted 20 years ago #Sampling is like swordsmanship; a sample won't make a sh!t rapper dope, but it will make a dope rapper doper. Gwen Stefani yanking a Isley's sample is a good example, didn't make her any better, but when cats like J-Live utilize that butter like he did with Numark on "Brand Nu Live", everything is set off. -

If it's true that great minds think alike, I appreciate that line Simon. I love samples when they're used right, but I still have respect for cats who work to make their own beats too; life is a paradox, keep looking for the third... -

Posts: 8Posted 20 years ago #im someone who samples to make beats, and although i pretty much only sample vinyl for the sound, i don't think it matters where your sh!t comes from - if it sounds good it IS good. this talk of 'sample ethics' is a contradiction. beat making with samples breaks the traditional ethic of making your own music from scratch (bands/musicians) anyway.
even madlib has said in an interview that he gets his samples from anywhere he can and he won't fork out silly money just for an original pressing.

But me, I'm a little extreme. I use loops 100% and vinyl 100%.
To be honest, I've havent even mastered this way of making beats but someday I will. -

I just raise my eyebrows when a cat sampling mp3's wants to tell me he's down with crate diggin or something, that's a little different issue though.
I just copped these CD's of Chinese Instruments, can't wait to hook em up on my 60!

Interesting thing happened last night. I was listening to a song that I had recorded onto my pc for listening purposes from my vinyl. I've listened to this song probably 2 dozen times, and I heard a dope loop last night..
Problem, it was .WMA format file. But I chopped the loop and threw some quick drums behind it...oh sh!t it's tuff! I'm still gonna go back and re-sample the loop because I've lost an assload of harmonics with the compressed audio. That's just me though, that's how I do it. -
