I thought I would post something here for yall to maximize your listening pleasure:
turn it up! no..seriously, your going to have to turn it up.
There is a trend in audio engineering and commercial music to make sh!t as loud as possible. And by loud I mean the squash the music until it is flat so that they can raise the level as high as possible. This is most prevalent in hip hop - people use plug ins in protools and in mastering to unnaturally flatten the sound to the point where it is squared off and very very loud.
I personally believe, now more than ever, that if you want it louder...turn it up.
God gave you a volume knob so use it! And pump that sh!t. I think on first listen you may notice that Stepfather, on the whole, is quieter than other records...but if you turn it up it opens up big time. This is in part an experiment and in part a return to how records were made back in the day (before all of our times).
We had mastered the record one time, then went back and started all over again with a traditional, simple approach. What we lost in volume we gained in depth, and i wouldn't do it different if I had too.
so use that volume knob and let it pump...you won't hurt nobody. I sincerely hope you all enjoy it. This is a personal record, a record about and for family and friends.
I'm sorry the album took so long but we got it straight and its almost that time.

also: the first time i heard midnight marauders I didn't like it. now it is one of my favorites of all time....just a thought. -

Posts: 291Posted 20 years ago #since im too cool for school, (which i undoubtetly am, as reflected in my univ grades) i can tell yall this: this is the best sounding rap record ive heard in a long time.. what it has in terms of sound that other P lps didnt have as much of, is depth or fullness or whatever you wanna call it. The sound is almost a 3D version of OST, in my opinion, if that makes sense. So yeah man, turn it up, and watch for them 808's poppin out of nowhere and lil delays and reverbs and pans and whatnots. This lp puts my mixing game to shame

I've read all the articles on the net about your Neve console, and how you are always trying to freak the "analogue warmth...." and as you just mentioned about the album being mastered like old records of the past...well that just makes me appreciate the sh!t you guys do that much more... I don't just throw on records and listen to the obvious sounds coming out, I look for the quality of the sound, and I am a true believer in getting the full spectrum of sound, something that analog has to offer over the digital era. In other words, I can't wait to turn the Step up to mother phucking volume 10 and enjoy the hard work and time you guys put in to making this soon to be classic record! I'm getting a bit dizzy now just thinking bout the album drop so I better get to bed...

you can't believe how excited i am. i think, i've never been so excited about an album that comes out. i allready feel the puts vibe around me, even the sound isn't here right now. it's still hard waiting for it. checking the puts forum almost every day, hoping to read some more news about the stepfather album. i guess the time has slowely come to end of waiting patiently. plus a dvd!!!woawawiwaa!!!! this is going to be a splendid "evening with the sound" and of course the dvd. peace... -

still better than ur average rap album though
i also didnt like those "wannabe hyphy" tracks
i like tracks like Step In, Days Like This, LA9X, The Brownout, You, On And On

I don' want to hear your gay ass remarks bout the album, it ain't even out yet for all of us... and so what if you're gonna buy the album, you shouldnt be cheating like that to begin with dude. Remember everybody... no excuses with the Stepfather, just buy it April 18th and in the meantime don't boot that sh!t, we don't need that, especially amongst the supposed true hip-hop and "P" heads.

Is it the same drum machine you used on "Joints & Gyms" from the Soundclash, Thes? It sounds like it could be. It's SO f***ing PUMPIN. Not made for Clay Aikin!
One more thing: I know I "stole" it, if you will... but I am gonna buy the damn thing when it drops. I found it when I wanted to see how many people were trading the "fake" Stepfather!
