First ever PUTS tune that i heard was San Francisco Knights, and ive been in love since that day. This was back in the summer of 2002 i guess, and i had just started in high school.
I was in my new classmate's room with him and another guy from the class, kicking back with cheap beers and some herbs. These guys kinda re-introduced me to hip hop, cause the very small town i lived in absolutely no one listened to hip hop except a kid i went to school with for a few years during which he got me hooked on Wu Tang, Beastie Boys, Snoop and underground Danish hip hop and that was basically that type of hip hop i listened to for many years.
So, hooking up with these to guys and their friends in high school was a whole new introduction to hip hop for me.

The first time I heard PUTS was around 2006 on the "Shoot your Shot" track off Ugly Ducklings "Bang for your Buck" album.
I was intrigued by this guy who called himself "K.Jackson" and Thes1 so after finding out it was a group called People Under The Stairs I checked them out on YouTube. I saw their Tuxedo Rap performance and went to Best Buy the next day and got "Stepfather"
I was hooked on the ride home. My addiction got worse when I purchased "O.S.T" and "Question in The Form of an Answer" two weeks later. -

I was in middle school. The only rap/hip-hop i knew of was whatever played on the radio and was popular. Needless to say i thought it was all lacking any real musical quality or originality. And in my ignorance didnt really think there was a difference between the two genres.
I remember one day my older brother was driving my somewhere and he was playing some rap/hip-hop (dont remember what it was) that caused me to say something along the lines of 'this music sucks and rap/hip-hop all sounds the same'. My brother wasnt having any of that and proceeded to play various rap and hip hop tracks to teach me the difference in the two. I figured it out pretty quickly having the two different styles played to me but i still told him that both genres sucked and didnt do anything for me. Right then on his mix CD comes on 'Acid Raindrops' and something just clicked in my head. It was love at first hearing(?). I still remember exactly what intersection we were at when it came on and whenever I pass Ogden and 53 i hear double 'lets have a mid city fiesta'.

Back like a two years ago when i actually started listening and getting into underground hiphop. Now underground and old school is all i listen to. Haven't turned the radio on ever since. -

must've been around 2003, just chillin in my room late at night listening to the hip hop show on triple j (weird coz i almost NEVER listen to the radio) when a song came on that immediately caught my attention. grabbed a pen and paper and waited for the girl to announce who it was. the song was either 'Yo' or 'LA Song' (sensitive mix) from '...or stay tuned'.
took a train to the city the very next day and bought the cd.
sh!t... just put this cd on again, haven't listened to it in ages!! reminds me of that summer, blazin' up with my best friend on my front porch... awesome times! -

Posts: 127Posted 17 years ago #The 1st time, daaamn- it was almost 4 years ago. I was working at some wack ass mortgage company in Brea, California. I ended up working with some cool heads- luckily. One of them was this homie that worked in my deptartment- her name was Nina. Real cool girl, fresh style, honestly just a dope head- all around. I think she had heard me bouncing my head to something.. . not sure if it was Atmosphere or Sage Francis- im sure it was one or the other.
It was then that she asked me if knew who thePUTS we're.
At that point, I wasnt really looking for music and was mostly listening to a few different genres of music- hardcore, metal, grindcore. Also, I'm from Orange County, so not much sh!t from LA makes it out my way.
Anyway, she brought her iPod over and pumped "San Francisco Knights" into my head- I can honestly say its been on ever since.
So yeah.. . that was my introduction.

I picked up Lyrics Born's "Later that Day" and then "Same sh!t, Different Day"... the latter had a Young Einstein remix that I was diggin' on. Then I got Funky Precedent (Vol. 1), and I heard "Journey to Anywhere" and after I found out Young Einstein was in UD, then I had to go cop all of UD's records.
Needless to say, I kept hearing KK all over the place on UD's stuff, and after "Shoot Your Shot," it was all over... Went and copped OST and the rest is PUTS-tory. I THINK (but I'm not sure, I listened to so much in a short period) the first song I heard was "Intro." The first track I pumped in my car was "The Outrage"... -

Posts: 14Posted 17 years ago #Believe it or not the first time I heard The P was off an American Eagle Outfitters sampler CD bout the time I was in Middle School. Mom's came home with some new threads for me and handed me the CD and said something to the extent of "I don't know what this is, they just gave it to me for free." Having nothing to do I threw it in the stereo and stumbled upon Acid Raindrops. Ever since I heard Mr. Rogers bust out, "Out on the porch...." I was hooked. -

We were going to see this group called People Under The Stairs play a show; the first concert I'd ever been to and I'd not even heard of them, so before we left my mate I was going with played some of their tracks. That was a good night! I got mad f***ed up on my way there (I must have been 16 or something), and somehow got into the club with a doctored photocopy of my passport. I had to sit on a trash can waiting to go in as I couldn't stand straight, and I think I had 3 prerolled spliffs in my pocket. I had to hold on to the railings at the front of the show for support for the whole night and just continued to get completely trashed (my mate's sister came along too and she was always a good one to battle her way through the crowds to the bar, if you were buying)
That was about 2000/2001 at the Concorde in Brighton, and you can see me in the DVD that came with Stepfather rocking out, I might even be smoking one of the spliffs at the time, I can't remember

Posts: 43Posted 17 years ago #I first heard The P on Tony Hawk's Underground back in 2006 when I was in 10th grade, and I was really feeling "The Next Step II" so I looked on rhapsody and found the track. Later I asked my A/V teach, who listens to rock, hip-hop and other stuff. He knew a lot about groups like Souls of Mischief and Pharcyde, but anyway he told that PUTS is really nice and that I should check out this song called "San Francisco Knights" after I listened to that I hit "Los Angeles Daze" and my P days began and are still here. -

Posts: 132Posted 17 years ago #The first track I ever heard was off DJ Yoda's how to cut & paste 2 and was Quid Control. The track was nice, but I never really paid much attention to it, then two years later I heard LA9X after I decided to check out PUTS a bit more as I'm a UD fan and was recommended again, since then I've been hooked on the jazzy loops and fender rhodes samples. To me this is my perfect type of hip-hop. -

It was probably 2 AM in the summer of 2002.
We were playing computer games, probably Shadowbane.
I was listening to 90.3 KEXP online, when they played "The Dig".
The next day I picked it up from the record store.
O.S.T. didn't leave my car for weeks, maybe months. -

Then I hear the bassline for The Joyride and I was like "this is dope" I bought O.S.T. and eventually everything else I could get my hands on, I've been hooked ever since.
