Posts: 10Posted 16 years ago #Alright all! Mark here, from Bucks UK. I've been signed up here a while, but rarely post so I thought I'd sort my sh!t out and get on here.
PUTS are definately the shiznit for me. With so much crap out there, its difficult to find other artists that I can dig. CANT STAND all this ringtone rap and utter bollocks that is polluting the airwaves. PUTS have that golden era sound that made me fall in love with Hip Hop over 20 years ago, and keep it real for me big time. Just love the scratches, dusty samples, vibes and funky breaks and I never tire of rockin' it on my ipod or in the car - sounds even better in this awesome weather we have down south this week!
To all a y'all who like PUTS, I'll recommend a few other artists, and I'd appreciate if any like-minded people could recommend others to me, cos these days keeping the faith in Hip Hop is tuff!
So check out (if you haven't already): Ugly Duckling, Giant Panda, Time Machine, Crown City Rockers & Rashaan Ahmad, Cool Calm Pete, Y Society, Damu the Fudgemunk, DJ Alibi, Edan, J-Live, Panacea, MC Paul Barman and MF Doom. Also check out Ty and Lewis Parker from the UK. Other suggestions welcome!

Posts: 10Posted 16 years ago #Yeh, I must admit I am feelin oooold... realised after I'd posted that really its nearer 25 years that I've been listening to Hip Hop. So don't worry guys, you're not the only ones!
I'll be keeping an eye out for you fellas on here and look forward to some friendly banter!

Posts: 10Posted 16 years ago #Hey Dodo! I feel I may have been a bit misleading - thinking back, it is more than 20 but lest than 25 years, probably around '88. I guess the very first stuff I was listening to was De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah, Jungle Brothers, NWA, (pre and post Ice Cube) Public Enemy and an MC from the UK called Rebel MC (thats a throwback to anyone from the UK who remembers!), and other artists from the UK such as Silver Bullet and Demon Boyz which I'm sure are probably unknown to you guys. Basically anything that had good beats and swearing in it that my mum and dad didn't like! Alot of Gang Starr as well, so was devestated to hear when he passed. God I'm gonna have to think back. There's more I'm sure! Then it was all I was buying from around 1990 onwards, along with Acid House and Rave music. It is a bit of an obsession though - always on the lookout for artists new and old that I can get into!
What about you guys? What are your earliest memories, and what was the first albums you bought? -

Sounds like you've got a serious hip hop CV. I'm ashamed to say my first hip hop album bought with my own money was a Will Smith CD...

Posts: 10Posted 16 years ago #No shame in that dodo! I remember buying 'Summertime' on 7 inch when it was in the charts back in the day, so hopefully that makes you feel a little better! Also Jazzy Jeff ain't a DJ to be sniffed at - have you heard his Michael Jackson tribute mix? Its out there on the web as a free download, just do a search - its called "He's The King, I'm The DJ" - quality music and quality mixing. Sure, ol' MJ was a bit of an odd 'un later in life, but theres no doubting his music was amazing.
Jehst is pretty good, man - seriously talented. I hate to say it though, I really think some of the UK stuff is guff (not all, but some!). I think I mentioned Lewis Parker and Ty, they're cool tho'.
Actually there's a scottish hip hop group on a DJ NuMark mix I had, did a wicked tune called "68 and I owe you one" or something, really funny lyrics, but some good skills! You know of em?
Good work on the na's... and remember, girls of the world ain't nuthin' but trouble... (an even older Fresh Price ref for ya...) -

Posts: 1,874Posted 16 years ago #yeah all time high, hilarious guys, I've seen em a couple times in edinburgh and glasgow. They're just a bunch of stoner eejits, like me pretty much. That was their crowning glory, getting on the numark mix. I like the sentiment of the song.
