Posted 18 years ago #I'm looking to purchase my first ever MPC with some scholarship money from school and am wondering if anyone has anything to say about which to get. There are all sorts of differences between different models, and I was hoping someone could clarify/make a recommendations as to which I should buy. I think I know I don't want the 1000, but the differences between the others (2000-5000) to me is mostly cosmetic and I need someone who knows to explain.... Thanks

Posted 18 years ago #Honesty the 2500 is a pretty good investment, much cheaper than the new 5000, it comes with some of the same things as the 5000, but tho the 5 has newer upgrades.
And if u sample from a cd, then the 25, and 5 hav disc trays
yeah but basically u can go to http://akaipro.com to specify what selection is suited for u. -
Posted 18 years ago #Well after talking to my financiers (my school), they have told me that I am getting an MPC1000, and recording and editing software for my computer.
So my question is for anyone who has an MPC1000 or knows a lot about them: What sort of hardware and software would you recommended for me to get the best out of the MPC? Im talkin memory, hard-drives, programs, etc...
I also need a recommendation for a needle for my turntable. One that is pretty universal and gets both high quality sound for sampling, and can withstand light scratching (nothing to fancy or fast) -
Posted 18 years ago #Hey, I have nothing to contribute as far as your pursuit to create. I just wanted to say big ups on making it happen. The world needs more people to care and to want to create and make music happen. In that regard, thank you for caring and I thank the P for making the dope-est sh!t there is and I can't wait for FunDMC.

Posted 18 years ago #Congratz on that man, you'll enjoy the 1000.
You don't really need much other hardware to get going with the 1000, especially not yet or untill you out grow it (which will take some time!).
One thing I do recommend is you might want to take a look at the JJ OS for the MPC 1000, it is a lot better than the original 1000 operating system and adds a lot of features from the 2500.
Check that out.

Posted 18 years ago #I agree with Quartz Loque- I would definitely recommend using the JJOS instead of the Akai one.
And upgrade the internal memory to 128mb. I can't remember what the 1000 comes with but it's pretty small, and you'll soon get tired of the 'INSUFFICIENT MEMORY!!' message.
As regards to software, any recording software would do, but it depends on how involved you want to get. If you literally want to just make a beat on the MPC and then record it, something like Audacity which is free would do. It may even offer some processing plugins aswell allthough I'm not sure. If you want to start doing more complicated production stuff then Pro Tools or Logic would be the way to go, although they are expensive.
Unless your computer already has a line in, you'll probably want to look into getting some sort of audio interface aswell.
Good luck, and enjoy your new MPC! -

Posted 18 years ago #Have you checked Ebay yet? Used MPC 2000's range from like $400-$800 depending on included items and upgrades(32mb, 8 output ,Akai FX card).

Posted 17 years ago #Regarding your needle question I'd recommend Ortofon needles.
The concord ones are dope.
I've got the Blue ones 'DJ S' I think they are called.
I must of had them over five years and used them for heavy scratching and juggling.
They still sound amazing and they are well worth the money.
One of the little arms broke off one of my concords (my tone arm was locked down and my sleeve caught the lifting arm) so I mounted them on the headshells and they still work great.
Ortofon are the cart sponsors for the DMC comp too so that says a lot!

You'll have to shop around for the best deal tho. -
Posted 17 years ago #Concorde's are good, another suggestion would be Shure M44-7's they track perfectly, and have a pretty good bass response. Either way both are a very good choice.

Posted 17 years ago #Word up, I got some Sure m44-7 scratch needles for Xmas, and they are dope. I couldn't be happier finally having needles that preform, since my previous needles could barely do that. PS to everyone who posted on this, thanks for all your help, it is a testament to this forum. My new years res. is to put a beat up online and start recording instead of just playing for my friends and in my live band. Ill get somethin up soon since I just moved back to school where all of my sh!t is. Thanks again yall and keep posting, don't let the chitchat die
