Oh and on a different tip - you heard of Fat Freddys Drop? An ill dub/reggae/soul band from New Zealand. In my opinion they are about the best band in the world right now, outside hip-hop. There debut album Based On A True Story is incredible. Check them out!

Posts: 281Posted 17 years ago #Time for me to chime in w/ my 2 cents. Flying Lotus / Los Angeles is my favorite release of 2008 so far (obviously Fun DMC hasn't been released just yet
). Next level sh!t. Progressive, yet soulful. Dr. Who Dat? / Beat Journey is an excellent instrumental piece from Jneiro Jarel (don't sleep on Three Piece Puzzle or The Shape of Broad Minds either). Ta'raach's Elovee is a nice set of instros, too.
funkyhomosapien: please describe Take's style, if you will. I've had my eye on a couple of his releases, but still need to check the myspace or snippets. -

Posts: 95Posted 17 years ago #I'm surprised no-one's said Ratatat yet, check them (him?) out, definitely worth a listen. I loved the albums, but wasn't a fan of the remixes I will admit, quite commercial sounding (which was unexpected considering the sound of the LPs) -

Posts: 77Posted 17 years ago #hmmm Take's style is a tough one. Definitely belongs to the same camp as Flying Lotus- I think I once read a review that described him as Brian Eno meets J Dilla so that gives you a very rough idea of his sound!?!
His production style is really intricate, and he rarely uses obvious loops, so his tracks have a very free and organic sound. The production is a lot cleaner, and he doesn't swing his beats like FlyLo though. If you like something that is progressive and soulful then I really recommend his album 'earthtones and concrete' which definitely ticks those boxes. What more can I say- just listen to him.

And yes, Shape of Broad Minds was seriously dope, although bar 4 tracks, I never really felt Three Piece Puzzle. I bought it off the strength of Beat Journey and was seriously disappointed. -

I just ordered the Forward Motion From Behind Tall Weeds EP as I was digging the snippets. I wasn't so sure about the Took One 10" snippets, though, so I held off. I didn't see Earthtones & Concrete at the usual spots, but I see it's for sale on his myspace. I'll check on that soon enough. -

Posts: 77Posted 17 years ago #Good choice. Forward Motion From Behind Tall Weeds is dope. The 10" is a bit different because it's really ambient and largely beatless. It actually sounds more like electroacoustic music than hip hop, which will probably determine whether you'll dig it or not.
And the LP is a little hard to find, but definitely worth it. I think there are some on discogs. -

Five Deez / Fifth Dimension, anyone? Heard 'em by random chance a few years ago. Their first LP, Koolmotor, is a modern classic. It starts out a bit like an R&B record, then some fairly straightforward but tight rhymes and beats come in... it winds up doing some spaced out Tosca-esque instrumental/turntablism-lite thing with "Afghanistan Dan's Skating Stand" (er, I think that's what it's called). There's only one dog on the whole thing. I dig it and highly recommend it.
Second that motion on Madlib's Blue record. Always gets me. Same with Krush's Code 4109. Saw him do that tour. Amazing. -
