record diggin is a culture that has been a vital part of hip-hop and a huge part of my life. if you dont understand the love and passion people have for this artform, then dont speak about "nerds and fat sweaty men" u think jackin other ppl's work is ok coz it makes money? or u think its the same thing that they did in the first place? u cant be serious man. go sample ur mp3's man, but dont hate on people who take this culture seriously.

Posted 21 years ago #Boy, if you want to take someone else's beat that's been EQ'd by modern standards (which is harder than it sounds, especially with drums), then go ahead.
But I think, if your not a serious loopdigger, then you can't steal a serious loopdiggers loop.
(I'm not fat and sweaty, nor is Pete Rock, Thes One, DJ Format, Prince Paul, Jazzy Jay, DJ Shadow...etc.) -

I knew that would rile some feathers. Look man, people take this sh!t way to seriously and that is for real.
I have been part of hip hop for years, years man. Since the early 80's, I know what it is about.
And I am serious about jackin other peoples work. HIP HOP PRODUCERS JACK PEOPLES WORK ALL THE TIME> STRAIGHT LOOP IT! WHY CANT OTHER PEOPLE DO THE SAME TO THEM? That is some bullshizzle if you say they shouldnt.
Oh and I dont hate on anyone who takes the culture seriously, no hate at all. I just find it funny when people get serious about it when real issues in the world are more important. Life, death, famine, disease, the environment, beautiful anciet culture and tradition. That kind of stuff is going on in the world, and people bicker about sampling ethics. That is funny.
Oh and have you ever been to a record show? nerds and fat sweaty men. -

Do writers take grammar too seriously? Do painters take brush technique too seriously?
"And I am serious about jackin other peoples work. HIP HOP PRODUCERS JACK PEOPLES WORK ALL THE TIME> STRAIGHT LOOP IT! WHY CANT OTHER PEOPLE DO THE SAME TO THEM?"
thats exactly the mentality that pisses the hell out of me... First off, hiphop producers dont "jack" people's work.Sampling is an art and i spend hours perfecting and tweaking loops and samples. i also play live instruments and to me, making sampling really work is as difficult if not more than laying down "original" stuff. And secondly, even if it was "jacking", why would it be an excuse for other types of biting? It would be wack either way, judging by your logic. -
Posted 21 years ago #Hip-Hop wouldn't be what it is if people didn't take the aspects seriously.
Commercial Rap is what it is because people stopped taking it seriously. -
Posted 21 years ago #Im gonna stand behind doc on this. This is ridiculous, some of these ethics you guys are bringing up. I didnt expect this thread to cause such a war. And hmm... who did i hear say "f*** a Loop Digger"?? .. Thes. I even have a recording of him saying that
im sure you do to.
By teh way someone also mentioned somehting like "people may steal producers drums but you dont see them making it"... I do..
J Kwons - Tipsy..
Drums came straight off a Clipse Joint produced by the Neptunes...
oh but my bad, most you cats keep it so "real" and "underground" you never heard Tipsy or a track from the neptunes.
sampling someones recording is taking..
I dont give a f*** if it came off a hip hop release or an old funk record. Cuz liek Doc said, and who is completley correct.. that hip hop producers took that sample from someone else.. its not his/hers. And the majority of you here will never come CLOSE to pushing near 10,000 units and the majority of you will NEVER clear a sample. So most of you have no room to talk.
To be real, I shouldnt of made this post in the first place.. But im one to always run my mouth.
To end my last 2 cents.... and to not put Thes on the spot, but just to use as an example:
He took the loop I sampled from someone else. Therefore I see no wrong in what I did. And matta fact I simply sampled it, I havent even used it on anything, don't really plan to either, just sitting in my zip disk. So dont go pulling your hair out tongiht in such distress that someone sampled hip hop.

Underground hip hop is what it is NOW because people stopped taking it seriously.
If I had the choice of choosing 2 records to listen to the rest of my life and the only choices were..
an Anticon record
or
a Cassidy record
im going to take the Cassidy with no questions asked.
As you see im taking two extremes of "hip hop" right here.
1. Anticon.. soooo far off into the white boy college nerd rap, experimental bullshizzle that it borders on the lines of even BEING hip hop... that sh!t would never find ANY street cred whatsoever
to
2. Cassidy.. one of the epiteme's of what hip hop has evolved into today. Still ran by people of color, still coming from the streets where hip hop began.. the white man wasnt there... Still hood, still real, still hip hop. Just evolved.
I don't listen to either. But this anti-commericial bullshizzle I keep hearing yapping out of the mouth of some back pack sissy bitches really is buggin out that true hip hop sh!t.
Now "real" hip hop has come to the point where you goto a show and 90% of the crowd is made up bootsy white boys who really have no clue of what they are doing running off their mouths about underground this, f*** mainstream that. And dont even start with me about races...
it IS a race related thing and I will be upfront and real with it. Hip hop was created by blacks and latinos in the inner city. The white man was NEVER there. The music most of YOU sample is music made from blacks and latinos. As a man of color I believe I have all the right to run my mouth like this. I know I got off topic...
but really
quit the "commercial" rap sh!t.. its played out..
white suburb boys all around me at shows is also getting played. I guess I'll have to start goin to "mainstream" shows to get down with my people. cuz it looks like the undergound fan based turned WHITE! enjoy our music! And just have a rememebr next time your white ass picks up a record to sample and you see the face of black or latino man/woman on the cover, that YOUR people once exploited us and now you are here again.. exploiting our people once more in an indirect fashion. And go enjoy it. Really do.
Now today in our society the white youth has a new appreciation for the colored culture... wether you black, brown or yellow. Your ancestors were the people enslaving us, putting us in internment camps, slashing our rights from the rest of the public, degrading, segrigating, profiling, us, my people.
and now you white man has the nerve to tell me what and what I cannot sample. I give a big f*** YOU.
PEACE to all the heads keepin it truley live on this forum, cuz most of you just hanging off the dick! -

Anticon or Cassidy ( I rather stick a screwdriver in my earss). I just dont like Cassidy, and I HATE Anticon.
But, Slim Thug, Fabolous, Mannie Fresh, Dipset. All "commercial" and all really dope. Hip hop is rap, Rap is hip hop. It is so many things. These Underground cats come from the suburbs and say what is hip hop and how to do it and that is ridiculous because most of them (from my experiences) came from punk rock and wanted nothing to do with hip hop. These are the same kids who will go to the show talking about "real" hip hop, and get all tense when a group of more than 2 black dudes walks in. These kids talk about supporting the "real" hip hop, but when Mobb Deep comes to their town to do a show, those "hip hop supporters" are nowhere to be found.
Oh yeah..........Drums are CONSTANTLY jacked from other hip hop tracks. It happens more than you think. Deal with it.
And you can sit around talkin about the ethics and how serious it is to sample and dig, while, like Melle said, J-Kwon is out gettin his with a jacked beat. Hhhmm Still a dope song, still jacked drums, still hip hop. Deal with it. -
Posted 21 years ago #Melle, you played yourself, and then started playin the race card. Youre a lame. Sampling somethin that has been sampled and tweeked and EQ'd anmd compressed and worked over is BITING. biting. Theres no two ways about it. And guess what..im white and im russian and my ancestors didnt do sh!t to the Coloured man. So from me, a cat who lived in the "hood" his whole life, heres a big f*** YOU. Cassidy sucks. Anticon sucks. Jay-Z doesnt. PUTS dont. Know your music. Just cause it came from the streets doesnt mean anything. Master P came from the streets and he's garbage. Nas came from the streets and he's amazing. Bite some more and then cry about being a man of colour when your bullshizzle gets called.

Posted 21 years ago #Everyone here in this thread needs a hug and a punch in the gut.
Cassidy sucks... that "I'm a Hustla" is a f***ing stab in the eye. Dude thinks he's Jay-Z. Swizz is going to warm out his welcome again.
Cats need to get over the Anticon sh!t. They're doing their thing too; packing shows night after night. So what if you don't like it... yeah, sh!t's not fair. If Anticon wanted to put out my record, I'd say hell yes.
I can't believe race was brought up here. Dammit... *sigh* -

Listen my man that is no different than sampling something that was written on paper, practiced and practiced, recorded in the studio, then masterered and pressed up, sold then rediscovered.
what is the difference? SOmeone still worked over the original as well!
that is some lame sh!t if you think otherwise.
Stubblefield slaved over his drums to get em to sound just so..... why is it not biting to take his drums and loop em? IT IS!
Umm by the way.....who gives a f*** if your parents are russian or whatever, cause im sure they were always decent to "colored folks"
I like it when caucasions say it aint right to use the race card. You are right, it is not right for your ass to pull the race card. -
Posted 21 years ago #keep elevating Doc, im glad someones on the same page brother.
Alibi just got that stick up his ass, when comments werent even directed at him, keep "keepin it real" Alibi. -
Posted 21 years ago #Alrite woah there. this is venturing into some other territory. i didnt bring up race. melle did. his comments were directed at white hiphop listeners. im a white hiphop listener. i responded. dont get your panties in a knot ladies.
moving on - docbeezy. u say its no different then just sampling. i disagree. I think the fact that the artform is different gives it different rules and ethics. If The strokes and the vines and the hives all sound like the stones - the rock community has a right to say theyre biters. and alot of the ppl say that precisely. sampling isnt breaking the rules of hiphop - it IS the rules. Its apples and oranges is wat my view is. If your view is different, its cool.. i aint got beef with that. im still gonna express wat i feel. its all peace. lets chill out. its justa message board. and were all here coz we love the P. peace
