Posts: 112Posted 16 years ago #I've been listening to my limited bossa nova collection lately (mostly Antonio Carlos Jobim and Sergio Mendes) and I realized I need to expand my collection. Anybody got any good recommendations? I need some warm bossa nova to get me through this cold winter, lol. -

If you haven't yet, go check the movie "Orfeu Negro" (Black Orpheus)... such an awesome movie, and Antonio Carlos Jobim did the soundtrack.
The Getz/Gilberto albums (#2 is a live one) are awesome (especially Para Machucar Meu Coraçao & So Danço Samba), but the success of "The Girl From Ipanema" from that album and the subsequent watering-down of bossa nova (because of the craze that followed it) have kinda soured most people on the album. I don't give a sh*t, it's still a good song. I like João's portuguese lyrics better than Astrud's English ones anyway... she was just a housewife until they called her into make the track, and she didn't even want to do it initially. It catapulted her to stardom (she DOES have a good voice).
Um... the biggest problem is the fact that Antônio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes and João Gilberto ARE bossa nova practically... Bebel Gilberto has picked up where her father left off, but there's not a whole lot else that isn't just an imitation of the original artists. -

Perfect link! it's what I use. When I've given it some thought I'll give you a list of stuff. Do you like Fender Rhodes piano in bossa nova?

Posts: 95Posted 16 years ago #Black Orpheus is dope as sh!t! One of my favorite movies of all time. So much good music, so much good culture, great cinematography and all that sh!t too, but most importantly is the music.
