Posted 21 years ago #YoYo, have you seen any of the culturama videos, and more importantly, have you seen the footage in the videos of the P performing? I want to pick one up but I just wanted to know (if you own any of em) if the footage of the P is good or not... like lengthwise (does it show Double on the turntables?) and quality wise.
Thanks man,
Dennis -
Posted 21 years ago #I haven't actually seen these vids cos they're hella hard to get in the UK, I'm holding out for another Culturama tour haha
pick at least one of them up Denny and let us know how dope they are (I think PUTS appear on all of them except #4)

Posted 21 years ago #Tim, I ordered the Culturama videos 2 and 3 today, as well as the "On Top of the World" compilation album with Double's own track "Living a Mean One." I found a distributor in Canada that carried all of the stuff, which is really convenient. The DVDs should be in by next week. I'll let you guys know how dope they are! Oh yeah Tim, do you have the "On Top of the World" comp. album?
Later,

Posted 21 years ago #Nah but I do have the Japan-only Ssence compilation which has 'Livin a Mean One (The New Gangsta Gangsta)' on it but I actually think that is a different track to 'Living a Mean One' - I'm still checking that one out, let me know when you get that stuff

Posted 21 years ago #I got the videos in YoYo! Okay, heres the breakdown... Basically, the Culturama series covers live documentation of true hip-hop heads doing their thing in the underground circuit, as well as videos made by these artists, usually of low budget quality. I bought Culturama Vol II, and III cuz those are the ones the P are in, along with One, But Volume One wasn't in where I ordered them from, so I only have 2 and Three. Volume II is a decent watch just for generally checking out some hip-hop acts, but some of the freestyles in it are kind of whack (Sole???). But, anyways the purpose of buying the vids was to see the P performing in a club (or anywhere for that matter), but I was quite disappointed, as all the vid has is Thes doing a sick verse (not on any album) with Double (you can't see Dub) scratching the "YEAH" sound from Youth Explosion in the background which is dope, but the angle of the camera is kinda poor and Thes' rhyme only lasts like 30 seconds. So out of that 45 minute vid, only 30 seconds of the P is on (I WANT MORE!!!)... If you're interested in checking out other guys, which I always am, than the vid is cool though and gives a nice glance of the underground. So on to Culturama II. I think this is a nicer watch overall (all music videos with a couple skits) with some pretty tight songs (too much Swollen Members and Moka Only though AHHH), including some MF Doom, Sadat X, Jigmastas and Fab 5 Freddy. However, if you're expecting a big portion of the tape focused on P.U.T.S., you will once again be disappointed, but the time that Thes does make an appearance (just Uncle Thester on the tape, not Dub), I guarantee you will laugh. The tape has Thes sitting in a chair with a mic, telling the crowd to take their shoes off just like Mr. Rogers haha, and than he takes his shoes off...Than the next scene has a nice glimpse of Thes chilling with his MPC and beaking some keyboards around him haha. But once again this segment of the P is very short, and if you aren't interested in other hip-hop acts, I don't recommend the tape (Thes made tight instrumental beats for the shows intro and credits music, and he does it in signature style so that is a bonus). I really enjoyed this tape as a whole though despite my disappoint with the P's coverage. Hilarious home quality type music vid's are done by Lexicon, Grand Buffet (wierd dudes I tell you), and Quasimoto. Basically, I just laughed my ass off at over half this tape. Finally, I got the CD, On Top Of The World, with Double K's track, Livin' a Mean One, and man its such a tight song. Tim I don't know if yours is different cuz I don't have the SSence album haha but it has 2K scratching a line that says "But I don't give a funk," at the chorus, and he just talks about all the fake people around him. I'll drop you some of the lyrics when I get more time, so we can see if the songs are different for sure. And Thes, if you check this out, could you tell me more about your experience with Culturama, and how come your feature was so short? Thanks a lot,
Sincerely,
Dennis Carson -
Posted 21 years ago #yo Denny,
about that KK track - I have heard the one with 'but I don't give a f***' that's why I got confused. I heard that quite a while ago but I remember it now you describe it, they are definitely different tracks - the one on Ssence is called 'Livin a Mean One (The New Gangsta Gangsta)' and is completely different.
It starts out with dope little tune (guitar? i'm not sure) then a fat bass comes in and Double K goes 'introducing to yall the new gangsta gangsta, the new type of funk for you to bump in your trunk, it's that nigga Double K, meant that in a good way...'
the tracks are different then which is crazy
anyway, thanks for the knowledge on that one man, the Culturama vids sound cool - one of you USA cats has to pick up Vol 1 -
Posted 21 years ago #It's funny the closest the fellas were to making a video was for 'The Cat'. Unfortunately the people who wanted to shoot the video had some rediculous ideas. If I'm not mistaken the director's vision for the video was that everytime people in this insane asylum would put on these headsets (listening to 'The Cat' I suppose), they would start oozing a white liquid from their ears. Let's just say that was turned down immediately. It's funny because if you know Thes and K, you know they didn't want nothing too much, just keep it simple. Well anyways, thought I would share that.

Posted 21 years ago #That story's hilarious Jazmak. You guys should make a video in the future, just don't get a wack director.
"Have you ever been pissing...uhh woke up and a you were pissing?" haha, I love that line from E-business, Dre.
Peace,
Dennis Carson
