My wife had me pick up a dead rat off the driveway the other day 'cause she was scared of it. Lil' piece of background: she used to assist on autopsies. And the rat scared her? Pssssh. She does the same thing with spiders. I oughta put a fake spider on her pillow tonight... I FEEL CREEPY.
Sure, SacTown, in the spirit of Halloween. This one is not that creepy/scary, but does have the paranormal and some feels at the end.
I haven't told this to anyone outside my immediate family since this story is very personal to me so here goes. There's quite a bit of back story that leads to event.
Back when I was doing my last year at UC Berkeley in California, I got a call from my mom saying that my grandma was having heart complications and was taken to the hospital. A week later, she passed. Being very close to my grandparents, who both lived in BC Canada, I was devastated. To make matters worse, my grandpa developed dementia around the same time. I took the opportunity to go back to Canada for my grandma's funeral as well as checking up on my grandpa. However, my Canadian passport had expired, which voided my passage back to the US through the Canadian border. Because I was older than 18, the only way to obtain an acceptable ID to get back into the states was to become an American citizen and get A US passport. Unfortunately, being that the death was so sudden, there was no way I could get naturalized in time for my grandma's funeral. I went through all the options, any way possible to attend the funeral. Both American and Canadian homeland security told me there was no way I could get back into the states without an acceptable ID. I had to sit out on my own grandma's funeral.
Fast forward several months. I graduated at Cal (couldn't find a job and was looking intently for one) and had just gotten my American citizenship. I was now ready to apply for my passport, which required a Certificate of Naturalization you get shortly after getting your citizenship. Being the dumbass that I was, I left my certificate in my car which got broken into just a week before my passport appointment. It was stolen out of my car. That paper wasn't cheap too. The son of a bitch piece of paper cost me $400 to replace. Anyway, my mom called me that my grandpa's health was failing fast and that he might go at any time due to his dementia worsening. I immediately had a huge pit in my stomach and started to feel ill. I told my mom that my certificate was stolen and she flipped saying that I was an idiot for not keeping it safe. I began the process again and applied for a replacement.
Then comes the call. My mom told me that my grandpa had passed. I immediately fell to the ground and cried, not only for him passing, but that I knew I would have to miss his funeral as well. The regret of missing both my grandparents' funeral is indescribable and still f***s with me today.
Shortly after my grandpa's funeral, I had phone interviews for several companies lined up. Feeling the need to be close to my grandparents, I kept each of their portraits close with me. I usually did my phone interviews in the closet since it was quietest room in the house and my voice was clearer (all you home MCs know what I'm talking about). Before each interview, I would lay them out in front of me sort of as a way to say "hey guys, I'm doing an interview. Wish me luck!" kind of thing. Their portraits are actually them sitting together shoulder to shoulder at their 50th anniversary, but cut in the middle into two separate pictures. Naturally, whenever I lay their portraits out, I put them in order, shoulder to shoulder.
During my last phone interview, I did the routine and laid out their portraits on the table. I went out to grab a glass of water and when I returned, I stood frozen at the doorway and noticed that the pictures were laid out in reverse. I had the biggest chill run down my spine. I did one of those dramatic zoom in effect on objects you see in movies. It was frightening at first since there was nobody in the house at the time, but slowly felt comforted in the idea that perhaps my grandparents had come visited me when I couldn't. I nailed the phone and onsite interview and had an offer shortly after.
A few years ago my wife and I travelled around New Zealand.
We stayed in a place called the Flying Nun is Gisborne. One night I went for a piss in the men's toilet and saw a shimmer of light over my right shoulder, I turned around and saw nothing but what I can describe as the haze you get on hot tarmac move across the toilet.
I said nothing but the next day my wife told me that when she was in the shower the snap top on her shampoo had been opened. I told her my tale and she thought I was shitting her. But, she wouldn't go to the toilet on her own after that.
Also, I live about 3 miles from some ruins that are about 400 years old or thereabouts, they are supposed to be haunted. Ive never seen a ghost there, maybe once when I was VERY drunk, bit that might have been the whiskey.
DAMN, Beer... that was a crazy happening, man. That's a good one to write down and keep in the family history. Definitely creepy, but great you picked up that job too. Someone trying to tell you something, perhaps.
And A La Carte... Now I know: when I go to NZ, avoid the Flying Nun... every now and then, I think my peripheral vision is playing tricks on me, 'cause I'll swear I see things, and they're just gone when I turn around. Can I get a hashtag: whiskeyghost ?
