Posted 16 years ago #yea i always looked at college like this:
all it really does is gives you an opportunity...you still have to take care of the rest
...but part of me says f the system...lets go live off the grid -
Posted 16 years ago #+1 to living off the grid. Can I be in charge of growing vegetables and erbs?
I'd love that lifestyle. Hard graft, plenty of outdoorsmanship, self sufficiency, dealing with your own problems. No tv, no computer games, no internet, no phones, no BS... god how I'd love that life... Living with what the land provides you with, living off your adaptability and ingenuity. Pure, that's what it is... *sigh* -

i hear that, i love the beach, that film with leonardo dicaprio, think im gna watch it 2nite. i always wanted to go there, my GF went before we were togeteher and saw THAT beach on the film, jealousy is not a emotion i like but. JEALOUS. lol.
however, if we lived off the grid, there wud be no P forum, but we can make changes in our life that can help, my dad has recently got rid of his TV and is trying to read more, he also re instated an old fireplace in his house so now he collects wood and burns that instead of using central heating. I suppose the P forum is my equvelent of facebook but the chat here is more intelligent than "???? is taking a shower" so i dont mind spending time on here, ive also tried getting off my PS3 n goin walking a bit more, its the little things, but i feel better for it.

Posted 16 years ago #Agree with everything on this thread so far.
I would've loved to have been a musical artist, but the talent just isn't there. I also would've loved to have broken into science before now, but I got in that catch-22 about needing experience to break into a lab, but not being able to build experience until I break into a lab.
So in the meantime, to make money, I jumped into a state job. Moved my way up, and now I'm a high-level analyst (basically one step short of a manager), wearing business casual (button-down shirt tucked into the khakis), doing a gang of legislative analysis, tech support, fraud claim analysis, webpage upkeep, and all-around office skulking. Everyone has been coming to me lately to fix all their sh*t, even when it's not "in my job description". I get a lot of variability in my work, so it's not horribly boring... BUT I'm still holding out for that CSI/Criminalist position if I can make it.
I actually had to go "take care of" two counter customers the other day that no one wanted to talk to, 'cause they smelled like weed, and they were these two huge black guys (and all these little white conservatives run the counter, so this was like meeting satan for them... punks)... they were hella chill, we chatted a bit, and I took care of their problem in under 5 minutes...
I'd like to follow my dreams and break out and everything, but you have to do what you have to do to get money, and this is what i had to do. not everyone can be an entrepreneurial or talented wonder and live free of the man. i wouldn't say that my dreams are shattered or i had some huge disillusionment, but i just settled into life... besides, i could still break out of here... since the economy's sh*t right now, though, i'm content to even have the job I've got. -

Happy with where your life is overall? Still chasing that dream to be a musician/actor/painter/filmmaker?
I wanna hear y'all speak.
how old are ya trench? wondering if i am the youngest in here or not lol. But anyways, I am at a desk job as a student assistant so this is definitely not my kind of work that i want to do forever ( i hate sitting down this long). I want to open up my own daycares/possibly preschools and work with children! hopefully in San Diego and start a new life out there someday. I love kids and want to bring back music in their life. We will have one hour jam sessions where I teach them about rhythm, instruments, world music, all of course fun stuff and understandable to 2-5 year olds lol but its all in my head and it will happen! -

Only Human said: I'm telling my academic advisor tomorrow that i want to switch out of my current major (Business Construction Management) into Visual Communication Design. I realized I don't want a desk job or to be a manager so I'm heading the art and design route. Art, design and self expression are really my passions, I'm just pissed it took me to the end of my sophomore year to get the balls to do what i want. At an engineering school like Purdue theres such an emphasis on science that they make you believe other colleges such as liberal arts are lesser schools. I don't let that phase me tho, they say do what makes you happy and everything else will fall in place. I'm an art boy for life f*** a suit and a tie because I'll know I made a difference on the day that I die.
Peace
I must say, OnlyHuman, your story is actually quite an inspirational one.
I can definitely respect that.
Me and Trench are the youngens of the P forum, Boombip. -

I feel like a lot of people think that the arts are "less" than engineering and what not. My boyfriend is a Mechanical Engineer major and he doesn't compare himself to anyone else or think his is better or harder than others (sh!t IS hard though lol) I am a child dev major but when i was History, some people were like wtf? what can you do with that? or i see people say "cut the humanties and liberal arts classes yada yada" those are important, maybe not to you but to others. I dont feel like any ones majors are better or lesser than the other. So do what you do!!! and like you said.. Fk a suit and a tie! thats how i feel even though i am a girl:-p
I am a youngin' too so i guess i am with ya guys -
Posted 16 years ago #BoomBip said it right "do what you do!!!" my buddies are on me right now saying "how'd you go from engineering to construction management to visual communication design". They look at it as a progressive downgrade, but now that I'm finally where i wanna be I see it as a progressive upgrade. I don't want a desk job, or to be a manager over anyone. If i can express myself, and keep my imagination/creativity fresh ill be more than satisfied with my sojourn in this universe.
Respect to all my brothers and sisters! You are the reason for me and I am the reason for you. Peace! -
Posted 16 years ago #just do what you want to do...and f what errbody else says...
when i was in undergrad i caught a lot of sh!t for being a COMM major....but i wanted to do radio and public relations...so i did it.
although public relations is pretty awful and wouldnt really wanna do that as a career...i would change anything. Most grad programs dont really give a f*** what ur BA was in anyways...unless it is something crazy specific.
like esomendia was sayin...college just shows an employer that ur not a "complete retard" haha...and that u can show up on time and finish a long term task. But i know a sh!t load of people who have graduated in all types of fields and cant even get an interview. -
Posted 16 years ago #I dont think it is a downgrade at all if it doesn't make you happy. My bf mom really wants his little sister to be a civil engineer cause her sons and herself included are in the engineer field, but i can tell its not what she wants. My mom was always just like do what you want dont worry about the money. I mean we will have our careers most of our lives and do we really want to look back and be miserable? have regrets? wish we would of done something else? I mean it does not matter what people think because this is how you will be spending YOUR life and it is not affecting theirs.

Posted 16 years ago #the earth has been around for millions of years and will be around for millions of years after you.what each of us has in this universe is our own life. live yours how you want.
For me that means being expressive, respectful, and open-minded to all possibilities/truth seeking.
P.S. BoomBip said this in another thread, but this is a great forum. I'm still relatively new, but it reassures my faith in humanity to see a place where people can get together and be completely respectful of each other.
Peace. PUTS. and Pub Chips. mmmmm -
