Posted 16 years ago #I agree wid everything too, especially sactowns point about " they want someone with experience, but how are you ment to get the experience in the first place? " its a f*kd up system when u can leave university after years of working hard only to end up in the same job as everyone else for the same crappy money and lack of job satisfaction.

yep! or you get a job in the industry you busted your arse off for and find out it's not creative at all, and you're sat at a computer 40 hours a week anyway.... f*** -
Posted 16 years ago #Looks like I got a life to look forward too after all this schooling. Dang. Are you guys still happy with your lives in general?
-
Posted 16 years ago #I'm very happy with my life, with some exceptions. But as long as I understand that there will always be issues to overcome and goals to meet, then I'm completely cool with it. I try not to be so caught up in my own sh*t that I'm of no use to anyone else, and I try to ease whatever burdens I can on myself and those around me... That usually keeps me smilin'.
Here's summa that Buddhism right here though: life involves suffering. Know that. -
Posted 16 years ago #"As long as u make the best of any situation with a smile on ur face your doing well in life, its when you give up and stop trying that you become just another statistic."----said by ME!!!! lol.
yeah im happy tho, somethings aint the besy but u gotta transend the bullshizzle to se the real happiness to be gained from life.

Posted 16 years ago #yeah im happy with life....its not perfect, but u gotta make the best of sh!t....i dont define my life by my job anyway,,,my job just supplies me with funds to do the things i want...but there are always other ways to make money lol

Posted 16 years ago #I'm happy with a chunk of my life but the job is killing me.
I feel like I'm approaching some sort of turning point though, can't really cope with office culture much longer, the grind is getting the better of me.
I feel like I've wasted the last 7 years of my life.
I spend more hours jabbing at my work keyboard doing a soul-destroying payroll job than I spend with my own kids - its no good, it has to change and I've got to chase my dreams.
Problem is my dream is to be a writer and to write I have to sit in front of another computer for hours and juggling that with the job and even more importantly, my family, is real real hard.
But I know this...it has to be done or I'll be one bitter old bastard in that nursing home.
The advice I would give to you younger cats is definitely to follow your dreams.
You only get one go at this.
(Unless you believe in reincarnation in which case, there's always next time...)
@Trench - you mentioned comedy, what you into? Writing? Stand-up? -

why not use a typewriter? seriously, you can concentrate on the words without a screen messing up your eyes. -

I'd once written about 250 pages on my computer (no joke, I was working on a novel... looking back, it wasn't all that good), and my computer crashed and my backup drive failed on the same day... I lost it all... even tried to do a free space restore on both of them, and no dice (that's what I get for buying crappy hardware). i probably could've paid a TON of money (this was in the 90's) for someone to pull the physical drives out and do some crazy magic on them, but I didn't have any money at the time...
So yeah, that's probably harder to do with sheets of paper... -
Posted 16 years ago #personally i worked for a local newspaper for 3 years, But i decided being indoors all day wasn't for me. I have been a landscaper now for 2 years and have never been happier. I'm out side all day in the fresh air and work with my hands. When i get home i have a feeling of satisfaction that i never had when i sat at a desk all day.

That's good news Dave. Is the pay reliable/steady? You live in like SoCal or Florida or something? -
Posted 16 years ago #I was initially going to say it's a tale of 2 paths but it's really more complicated than that. Yes, you should follow your dreams but if that held true everyone in the world would be an athlete or a movie star.
So if you don't find yourself under the bright lights maybe the corporate path is for you. Not all of corporate America is boring, the majority is, but a steady job will afford you the chance to travel, purchase nice things and build good relationships.
As for me I work as an accountant for the state of California, I went to a 4 year University and make a decent wage. Do I plan to do this all my life, NO, but until a opportunity arises I will continue to work hard, stack my chips and hopefully one day have enough to not work ever again.
Trust me I would love to be a Thes1 or KK, where my job would consist of traveling the world, making music, and performing but I'm sure there is so much BS they go through that at times they might question how longer they can do this.
If you are young and wonder what would want to do with your life I say this:
Get good grades go to a good school and continue to work hard both on your academic career and personal interests. A good education is something no one can ever take from you and can always fall back on. If you are good at whatever else you do opportunities will arise even after you are done with school and you should pursue them.
Look at Thes1, he's not a thug from the street who made it, the guy went to USC and a talented artists. I'm sure the education he got made it possible for the P to reach a worldwide audience.
Just remember you have nothing to prove to anybody but yourself. -
Posted 16 years ago #Yo Dangerous Dave, I'm jealous man, that sounds ideal. I've always thought working in the dirt, creating stuff, would be good fun and incredibly satisfying. Probably not the best job to do in scotland though, given the precendent of sh!te weather...
