Yeah, you know him as the sh!t one out of jazzy Jeff and the fresh prince.
Anyhow, me and the missus had a disagreement about him. She thinks he's cool.
I think he's the tom jones of rap. Plodding, doddery ole fucker (think the lifeless 'gettin jiggy vs puts at the disco), who's right? Am I being too mean on will?

The old stuff is cool, always liked Parents Just Don't Understand. But you're right, thats probably more Jazzy Jeff than Fresh Prince. Nothing good about getting' jiggy though. And I don't think I'll be listening to the Men In Black soundtrack anytime soon. I'd probably take Tom Jones over him too.
Men In Black 3 is awesome btw. Was watching some of that last night.

Not really getting the hate for "gettin' jiggy" - the original sample is a classic and you can't fault the production. Lastly, who in their right mind can turn down a hype williams video?
Listen to Jeff and Will's back catalog for some classic rap, and if you keep your ears open you might even hear a sample or two that thes has used:

Double K uses the entire intro verse from this in a lot of live shows... its dope.
Fresh Prince might have some cheesy hits in his more recent catalog but was big in the 80s and no doubt had a lot of influence. He also has that ethos The P share - not taking himself too seriously!
Plus I appreciate his acting. Some turds amongst it but you can't mess with Pursuit of Happiness, Ali, Seven Pounds...

I remember when girls ain't came out, it was good to see the reply 'guys ain't' on the b side of their debut.
Jeff had the talent, surely, cant knock will for his hustle (he's a bit like Madonna, gone a long way on little juice) but he's limited rap wise. Having said that I do own quite a few jazzy Jeff and the fresh prince records.....

I think you're being harsh. I definitely went through a phase of thinking like, "this ain't hip hop". But he has dropped some gems. Summertime?!? Are you kidding? That's some classic sh!t.
I have to admit, despite my protestations at the time, Jiggy is a bomb record. It's totally all about the sample though. The rhyme is wack! The whole thing about having a cigar but not lighting it...? Sad.
There was a track called Freak It or Freakin' It from around 2000 which was pretty dope too, based on Love Hangover. Trackmasters made good Hip Pop. Nothing wrong with it.
And I totally agree with Po about the fact that you have to cut Big Willy some slack for the fact that he doesn't (or at least he didn't) take himself too seriously.
But yeah, cheese factory, for sure.
