So, this topic stems from what WAS a great weekend that turned into a really sad one.

I went camping for 3 days and had an amazing time, get home and as soon as i step out of the car my step dad breaks the news that our dog had died:( They couldn't find him all weekend but my step dad finally found him laying underneath our boat peacefully passed.. He was old, had heart disease, cysts and we knew the time was coming, but you just never expect it to happen=\ Our wonderful guard dog was the sweetest, most loving dog and protected us like no other.

I just broke down in tears because I am so close to this dog. We have had him 8 years, he was about 13 or so when he died. I have lost pets before and cried and what not, but nothing has ever broke my heart more than his passing. We buried him next to this little pond area we have on our property and it was the hardest thing I have seen in a while.

Both my parents never cry, and my mom came into my room just bawling because this was her moms dog and when my gma passed away in 03, we took him in, so it was sort of her last connection to her mom ya know?

I am definitely gonna miss him chasing my car up the drive way.. greeting me everytime I open the door. Playing with him everyday, just everything. I have grown up with him more than a third of my life. Even the little chihuahuas have been depressed, laying down, howling at the end of the driveway. Weird stuff that they never do.

Sorry for the depressing post I am just a mess right now. This dog has had more of an impact on me than most of my own friends! Our family is definitely hurting and no one will replace him but I hope we can find another dog to help fill the void later on.

Have any of you guys had a pet that passed that was hard for you? or just a strong attachment to one? post a pic of em too if you have one. Its crazy the power animals can have over us sometimes because they can make you more happy than people can. They are always happy to see you, always a joy to be around, they can drive you crazy but I just have uncondictional love for animals.

D*mn, I'm so sorry to hear about, Meeko, bb. That's a helluva loss. I've already had to put two cats to sleep (my grandma's cat "Muppet", & my cat "Blackie"), and the cat I have left at my parents' house, Luna, is like 17 years old, so she's not long for this world either... but I already have a HUGE attachment to my current younger pets, Pico and Nano, too, and I'd probably break down like a little kid if I lost 'em. It's rough.

Funny how we can see hecka violence against people on TV screens and it's all good, but suffering in the animal world is amplified for so many of us. Probably because they rely on us so much. Not sure.

But yeah.... big RIP Meeko.

Thanks Sactown.. ya it is hard.. I go outside today and just started hella crying cause im used to him walking me to my car=\ its so weird you dont even understand.. being around an animal since i was what.. 12? and now im almost 21.. I hhhhhhhhate that they dont live that long man.. i wish they could live as long as humans! lol that would be dope.

I know he is finally at peace though. He was old and hacked a lot and it was time. I am just so sad that i had soo many pics of him on my cell phone that got stolen and now ill never have em again =\ luckily i got a few on my digi cam though. Cherish your animals folks and take loooooots of pics!

+1... Most definitely, I think it could lead to bigger stray populations, BUT I still want my animals to hang around with me til I'm old too.

yah bip that is very very sad... I have 3 dachshunds and I dread the day they will pass. My dogs are like my kids, so I can relate to the closeness you feel to Meeko.

In my experience, the only way to truly get over a death of a close family K9 is to get another like Dusty... when the time is right of course. It sounds to me like he passed in a very comfortable place (mentally & physically). You should try & think of the positive, how good his life was, how long you had with him, etc. I now it's not much of a comfort... there is never an easy way around death.

I think when i move out it will help cause i wont be driving up the driveway anticipating his arrival to my door to lick me =-\. Man i dont think i can ever get my own pet.. i dont know what ill do when it passes. Not that he wasn't mine.. but he was mor of the family dog and I am gone so much i didnt get to spend hella time with him. When i have my own.. after college probably when i actualyl DO have time.. this will be a lot harder for me =\

I know what you mean about moving to a new place. I've had a lot of friends that have had to move out of houses after a death, whether human or not.

You should get an animal that'll live a long time... like an elephant, an eagle, an oyster (ooh, exciting!), a sea tortoise, or a parrot. I can just see you riding through rio linda on an elephant with a boom box strapped to it's *ss.

Just trying to break up the sadness with some humor, y'all.

I hear yah, but like the old saying goes," I'd rather fall in love & lose said love than to never have known love at all." The good will always outweigh the bad. Try to focus on all your good memories and realize why it hurts so much, because he was that special to you! Like you said bip, time is your friend on this one, without a doubt...

When my pups, god forbid, pass on... I plan on getting some precious stones/Jewelry made from their ashes, that way they will always be with me, not just in memory...

Lol i am thinking of getting a bird whenever I have MY OWN place. I will get dogs n cats of course but i do want to have more pets.. I had a snake until it got loose in my house somewhere.. I also had hermit crabs and it made me hella sad when they passed away! even though the f*ers bit me all the time haha.

I've got the best one (this is no joke, either): we had a mini box tortoise named Speedy that ran away. We left him alone for a few minutes... gone.

Hella sad, but ridiculously funny at the same time.

I had a hamster called houdini who was always escaping, hence the name... we found footprints in some custard on the stove one time, and never saw him again. I also had 2 gerbils, genghis and rudolf (rudolf was my brothers, what a p*ssy)... Genghis was the hard one, and lasted longer, but when rudolf died, genghis buried him in the saw dust and then got really sad, and didn't last much longer. Sigh.
