Picked up the new Shadow LP today!
I was a bit dubious but after a couple of decent(ish) reviews I decided to take punt (not listened to it yet).
Anybody else heard it?

It's a shame but I should have read more reviews. I think I got all sentimental...something which you should never do with music.
However, if anybody in the UK wants it then it's for sale on discogs. Near mint, played once!

I take it this was a bit of an impulse buy (fueled by fond memories of his works from the Endtroducing era)? Had you been keeping up with what Shadow's been doing in "recent" years at all..?
As much as I love his early stuff, 2006's 'The Outsider' and everything since didn't resonate with me at all. Nearly bought the 'Hidden Transmissions From The MPC Era', as it seemed to contain all the necessary ingredients, but in the end I decided I didn't really need it. Something just seemed to be missing, whether it was some part of the recipe or that final magic touch that would've turned rough sketches and demos into complete songs.

Posts: 577Posted 9 years ago #I enjoy reading reviews btw, but I usually only do it after I've listened to (and/or bought) the music myself, to see what someone else thought about the record.
A good, insightful review can often provide info you might not have known, point out details you may not have noticed and so forth... But I also see quite a lot of reviews that read like the author simply rearranged the words from the press release, reels off a string of featured/related artists or begins and ends with "it's the new album by XYZ", so it's automatically great or automatically sh!t. -

Aye, an impulse buy and I should have known better. I haven't touched anything he's done since The Private Press, and although that's no Endtroducing, it has its moments.
I should have listened to a few tracks/snippets which is what I normally do. Still, I've got TGOS2 landing any day now so all is well...

Completely agree about 'The Private Press' though. In fact I very much enjoyed the 'In Tune And On Time' live show (DVD) that came out shortly after, but that's the cutoff point for me.I completely understand Mr. Davis having to move on and do something different, I think most fans weren't particularly happy with the new sound however. (I've read some really bad things about his live shows in the last couple of years as well.)
I know it might sound silly, but I've found myself wondering whether it might've made sense for him to do a complete collaborative record with some other artist to keep him "grounded" and reign in some of the ideas that stray too far from the sound that we, the fans, loved? The live projects with Cut Chemist were all good as far as I can remember and the behind the scenes footage clearly showed them building off each other's ideas... -

Posts: 3,618Posted 9 years ago #It is very unlikely for Shadow to ever make an album that is as intricate and defining as Endtroducing was at the time it came out. At the same time it's crazy to think he would be trying to make music similar to what he did 20 years ago!
He has changed up a lot over the years and I think he has tried to innovate his own sound. I'm not a huge fan of his to know his whole career and I don't think there's anything on his new album which is groundbreaking but I do like the track he's done with Nils Frahm- it's almost like some of the stuff he did with Krush. Heavy beat and spaced out. And the main single he has out at the moment is mad sample usage!

Posts: 577Posted 9 years ago #Yeah, I re-read the 33 1/3 book(let) on Endtroducing not too long ago, and Shadow explains a lot of stuff about the album and how some of his later releases (UNKLE & The Private Press) already felt like a "different era" to him.
As I said before, it's completely understandable that he's moved on to a different sound - I just wish there hadn't been such a distinct break from the overall feeling and aesthetic of his music beginning with 'The Outsider'. Endtroducing was incredibly deep and resonated with a lot of people on an emotional level, and personally I just don't feel any of this with the newer albums.
Krush on the other hand has stayed a lot more in the lane he's carved out for himself and I thought there were some decent tracks on last year's 'Butterfly Effect'. (Some stinkers as well, but let's not get into that...) -

Sold it for a few pounds loss so happy with that.I agree with Twelve about Krush. I've got all his LPs and there's always some good stuff on...but yes, a few rascals on 'Butterfly Effect'!

The only thing I thought might be midly interesting about this was the booklet. I'd imagine most folks already have 'Endtroducing' and probably 'Excessive Ephemera' as well, so why pay 100 bones for new packaging that doesn't even look particularly nice and a remix album that strikes me as aiming for maximum crossover appeal? (TBH I don't even know who some of those guys are, but the idea of Adrian Younge messing around with any part of this musical masterpiece alone made me throw up in my mouth a little.)
