This is a loaded topic no doubt. I have no love for the stuff I hear on the radio, but at the same time I realize & understand why people like it, and that's not to say that it's because it's good music either. I feel it's because they really aren't dissecting the music like you or I, but rather they are just wanting to have fun and be cool; and what's cooler than the hottest, newest trends right...? My wife loves the radio tunes... know why? Because she can learn a song within one or two listens and she can shake her ass to it. Plain and simple. She isn't listening to song trying to breakdown the production style/techniques/samples/references etc. Now me on the other hand, I am usually too critical I must admit.
I always try to look at music as if it were a painting. I might not understand the artists purpose for every brush stroke, but if I can just appreciate the fact that it's art then all is good. I hate abstract paintings, while many covet them as priceless...
We all have certain prerequisites or parameters for what we consider to be ill musically. Like Mambo said, The P got me into diggin', which has opened up a whole new musical universe to me. I found so many records that if you were to judge the record solely off of what you hear in the first minute or two, you'd turn it off. But by being open-minded and non-bias by still giving the record/artist a chance, I find that there are so many great things to take away from most music.
