Posts: 1,528Posted 15 years ago #they once did a show opening up for the Flobots at the House of Blues here in Chicago. They did the song and that linecome up. They cut the record. I'm the only one in the audience that responded lol. Thes then went into a rant about Hip-Hop.

Posts: 3,255Posted 15 years ago #Yeah, I think it would be weak for someone to actually have to go to school to learn hip-hop. BUT for a while, I was thinking about starting a college curriculum on hip hop, and even tried to kick out a fake "course schedule". You know:
I) Origins - Jamaica, "Toasters", Sound Systems, Funk, etc.
II) New York - each section of the "4 Elements" (criticism thereon to be brought up later in the class), cyphers, the "community" feel and self-expression angle, early films involving hip-hop, sampling & Biz Markie's legal troubles over "Alone Again"
III) The West Coast response in LA & the "Gangster Rap" revolution - "East Coast" vs. "West Coast", branching out into rock, critical reaction from media, parents
IV) Hip Hop explosion - Dirty South, Crunk, Hyphy, Philly, etc.
V) Sidenote: DJs vs. keyboards vs. computers vs. live bands - what is hip hop?
VI) The media perception turnaround - emphasis switches from censorship to increase in marketability, "radio" rap, "ringtone" rap
VII) "Underground" / "Alternative" / "Throwback" / DIY emergence - backlash against commercial rapListening Section:
(and this would probably have some 8-10 required listening tracks, and 20-30 "further listening" tracks, PER CLASS PERIOD) - for instance, early classes would include Fatback ("King Tim III"), Sugarhill Gang ("Rapper's Delight"), Beastie Boys (their transition from punk to hip hop), Boogie Down ("The Bridge is Over"), etc. -

Anyway, to tie it back in, I could see someone not knowing about some older hip-hop IF it hasn't aged well through the years, but I agree that not knowing "Rapper's Delight", "Ya Mama", "Humpty Dance", "Insane in the Brain", "Can I Kick It?" or something equally as memorable is straight... up... WACK.
