So, I have been intently following the Premier League and reading The Guardian and listening to their Football Weekly podcast for "local" football coverage. Just curious where do you blokes rank the English newspapers. What are they? Are each paper geared towards certain areas of the country? If you live in London, which one should you be reading? Just curious if anyone can provide insight into that stuff.

Posts: 1,659Posted 15 years ago #Traditionaly, papers were linked to various political partys, so if you were a labour supporter you would read the sun, if you were a conservative then the daily mail and i beleive if you were a liberal democrat then the guardian would be your choice of reading. (the dail star which basically makes stories up and has semi naked ladies in it was originally a communist newspaper, lol, how times change) Of course, each area has its own specific paper so prehaps a london cat could answer your question better, but thats a little rough overview, though i could be wrong, who papers support is fickle nowadays!

Posts: 1,528Posted 15 years ago #I haven't really read any other papers online except the Guardian. I think when searched EPL stuff in Google, an article in the Guardian was one of the first links. I like their podcast and the writing on the football area of the sports section is good. Pretty much been my only source other than epltalk.com, caughtoffside.com (for silly transfer rumor stuff), and various other Arsenal sites.

Posts: 3,618Posted 15 years ago #well, newspapers over here are broadly broken down into 'broadsheets' and 'tabloids'.
The broadsheets (The Guardian, Telegraph, Observer, The Times etc) are well-respected and known for high-quality journalism, although they all have their own political agendas obviously. The Independent is awesome because they attempt to be free from supporting a specific political party.
Tabloids are generally considered less-academic and less "serious" (The Sun, The Daily Mail, The Express etc) - typically with red banners, some nude ladies, a lot of celebrity "news" and big headlines and scoops. Most of them are very blatant about their political bias (although most of them are also owned by Murdoch) but as mass-market publications, can be very influential. Such as in the last election where The Sun decided to drop its historic support for the Labour party and back the Conservatives instead.
All of those papers are nation-wide, and then generally in each part of the country you will get local papers specific to your area. So for example in my area there's another paper called The South London Press, or The Local Guardian or some such...
And don't even get me started on the 'free' London papers, that every mug on the tube sucks in bullshizzle from like osmosis...

They have a pretty good international printed version too although their website is excellent anyway.
@ YoYoPo. yeah I hate the 'free`' London papers too, full of bullshizzle for the brain-dead masses and I don't think they're very good enviromentally either... we've got video screens on our underground in Munich which is somehow much nicer.
