Do you keep your records in plastic sleeves and if so which way do you put them in, from the side for easy record access or from the bottom for secure record storage? Any body else how do store you records. Also on a shelf or in crates or totes? -

Posts: 576Posted 20 years ago #I just put mine on the shelf and the 45s in a Budweiser Crate. Can't use milk crates in England (or atleast London) because they have dividers. -

Posts: 384Posted 20 years ago #Definatly a cool temprature spot, and dry, you dont want them to wharp distort, or mold. Away from heaters, ovens, raging fires. Handle record from sides, your fingers have oils.
Use some rubbin alcohol and water to clean the record, in a circular motion following the circle pattern on the record. Ive made it a habit to wipe the record on the side of my shirt before i play it, if im wearing a plain white. Some material can charge the record with static that cause dust to stick.
Can clean the record case with some furniture polish, or zippo fluid to remove scuffs, markings, stickers.
keepping the plastic casing around the record case will help keep the cover clean, but not free from mildew, so keep the wax in a cool spot!
Crates work best for me, i store the 45s and records without cases sideways in the crate. Always stack up, never flat.
I recently came up on some records that my friends mom had sitting in her garage for years. Each record is still in its plastic sleeve, sides of the sleeve taped, and taken care of. Its nice to have clean records. -

Posts: 524Posted 20 years ago #oh and clean them counter-clockwise because if u do it the other way, clockwise you will push the dirt into the groove. Clean them with like the alc/water mixture or Ronosol and them use from Gruv Glide record cleaner, it de-static-tizes( :-? ) the record. Spray your slipmats with Gruv Glide to and it will help remove the static. Store them loosely, but snug, tightness can cause problems say if your crate fell or something they might break.
Some of these tips can be found in the lastest issue of scratch, da beatminerz drop some knowledge on record care, btw just read that article and put the mag away, i cant believe the name of the mag is scratch....name doest reflect content very accurately(its the angry dj inside of me i swear

Posts: 488Posted 20 years ago #My favorite new way (i just started doing this about a year ago and I think it's the best way) is:
normal plastic sleeve with the record inserted bottom down, so the top of the jacket matches the top of the sleeve (making opening it innaccesible). Then put the vinyl in a new 12" sleeve and insert that behind the jacket, so that it can be removed and reinserted without touching the actual record jacket. The reason is threefold:
1) putting in and taking out the record over time over and over again can split the seems of the aging glue in the record sleeve.
2) records stuffed tightly in a shelf or a crate over time will result in "ringware" and storing your records like this will all but eliminate that problem
3) You can actually shelf your records without the sleeves sliding off and looking all half pulled out, etc.etc.
