):Spitta and his two homies rolled into Davis, where we met up and caravaned the hour-and-a-half over to Oakland. Once we were in The New Parish, we noticed Double K by the merch table and Thes onstage prepping the drum machine. We talked with both of the homies a little bit, but they were actually working merch themselves because Brendan had the night off to do something else. They sold MAD amounts of stuff last night, including signing hella sh*t and taking photos with a lot of people.
There were four opening acts. The first was a decent surburban-looking white dude (think, like... maybe Jack Johnson, but rapping), and he wasn't getting much love from the audience. He was putting in effort, though, and it showed. I had no beef with him, he was aite. The second was a girl with some long dreads and a bulked out guy backing her up, and they did most of their rapping in Spanish. There were still a lot of "opening act"-looking faces in the crowd, but they actually picked up the mood a little bit, and a lot of people were feeling them. The third was a standard Serrato/computer/two turntables DJ who mixed Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def, Headnodic, and a few other things together. Not bad. The fourth was a guy who worked a bunch of trigger pads/buttons to create some interesting-sounding beats and atmospheres... sorta reminded me of an early DJ Shadow. The venue was much more packed at this point, so he got some love from the crowd, but there was a group of wankers up on the balcony yelling "you suck!" and things, so that sorta dampened the crowds enthusiasm to keep cheering him. B*tches.
Funny note: before the show when I was talking to Double at the merch table, and we had some interesting convo:
- I mentioned "Bobby" from the "Bobby in the hood/on the street" tracks on American Men Vol.1, and Double told me that Bobby is still alive and lives in Oakland, but he's a really old dude. Double reminisced quite a bit about that guy.
- I asked him about the new Tribe Called Quest documentary, and he said he saw it, and it was rough for him to watch. He said he's always been a Phife dude, so watching Phife sorta break down was difficult for him. We both agreed though that Ali was in the toughest spot, though, 'cause he was powerless to stop the other two.
- Double's favorite De La Soul MC: Maseo. Double's favorite De La Soul album: De La Soul is Dead (he says that he was really not impressed with Buhloone Mindstate... that stabbed me through the heart... he likes Stakes is High, tho). Double's favorite Freestyle Fellowship MC: Myka 9.
Anyway, not much else happened before the show that was all that interesting, but that's not why you're reading this, huh? Alright, here's the good stuff:
They came out on stage, the crowd went nuts (the place was PACKED, up top on the balcony and down on the floor), and they just started right off with the Super Mario 2 intro. Some points:
- Thes and Double repped Oakland like MAD. It was their first show EVER in Oakland (!!!!!!), and they talked about how much they liked Oakland and all the good music the East Bay has produced (they mentioned Del, Too $hort, Souls of Mischief, & E-40).
- For the first time that I've ever seen, Thes got really political on stage. He cheered on the Occupy Oakland protests, did a lot of "f*ck the Oakland PD", and he went OFF on commercial rap, endorsements, signatures on Mountain Dew cans, etc. He mentioned Occupy at least three or four times during the show,.
- The audience reaction was so intense, that you could tell that Double and Thes were really surprised. They kept talking about it being the best night of the tour so far. They were AMPED. Thes was "in the zone" a few times during the show, and he was completely making rock-star "ALRIGHT!" kinda faces.
- There was ONE dude up in the balcony that they kept yelling at though, 'cause I guess the dude was just sitting there texting the entire show, and no matter how much PUTS or the crowd yelled, the dude just sat there.
- It was a full show... they did some freestyling, some jamming, some scratching, and they played a LOT of cool sh*t.

The Hang Loose (they invited all the ladies up on stage)Thes ran off stage STRAIGHT to the merch table and did even more signature, sales, and pictures (I think he signed some girls' midriffs too, yeaaaaaaah). The club eventually cleared out, except for a few people... that's when I did the interview, and I ended up getting out of the club and back to my car at 2:45 a.m. (got back to Davis around 4:15...)
Other funny stuff:
- Spitta's friend, who works as a pro photographer, got a video of Double K doing a shout out for his photography website.
- Two ladies were snuggling up to Thes for a picture, and when I yelled "he's married, ladies!", then one of them came over to me. I said "I'm married too (showed my ring), but like Thes, I can't resist hot women"... she said "ooh, I like your ring, married men are so hot" (?!?)... she chatted me up for a little while longer, then KISSED MY RING, and walked off... I was sorta stunned...
- One girl in the front row was jumping up and down for one song, and her t*ts completely popped out... she just stopped, covered, and for the rest of the show, she kept trying to dance with her hand holding her shirt up. It was sorta amusing. Why didn't she just tuck 'em back into her bra?
- After most everyone left and there were only a few of us left, this one guy really started freakin' me (and probably Dub and Thes) out. He said he was a local Oakland schoolteacher, but he just kept laughing at random things and saying the oddest things. He seemed really concerned about whether Dub and Thes had a "place to stay for the night", he'd interrupt our conversation and ask really off-topic, odd-ball things (even during my interview... Thes had to tell him to be quiet at one point), and he'd keep excusing himself to leave... and then stick around.
My loot for the night (the CD in the middle is an OST Party Sampler promo that Thes had accidentally thrown into his merch case that he gave me for free 'cause of the website):

There really wasn't a backstage at this venue (or if there was, the homies weren't back there long)... kind of a bummer, but we just conducted our interview after everyone had left with them sitting on the stage edge, and me just kinda standing there. The other weird dude I just mentioned kept trying to interrupt everyone, stand in front of me, laugh all high pitched at everything, and say random sh*t, so I won't be transcribing much of what he said when I write it all down.eightbitbreaks said:

Double (who was a little tipsy at this point) looked at him like "this fool's crazy", and started putting him in his place... and the other guy didn't even notice that he was getting talked to... I think the guy was on E or something...

also bummer that you guys didnt get to hear uprock boogie live. I think that was my favorite jam from the amoeba in-store :D

I think you should splice up all the parts where the weird guy was interrupting. Give them to Thes and Double K for them to make a "Foolish People" remix or part two with the audio samples of dude talking. That would be hilarious.

I think that was my favorite jam from the amoeba in-store :DYeah, I was semi-bummed that they only played the first two tracks from the new album, but I have to say one thing about that: I've never been a huge fan of the Second Track before, but that song was one of the best songs of the night and seeing it live gave me a HUGE respect for that song... especially the "DOUBLE K!" from the audience when Thes said "What's up, cuz?" and Double's scratching at the end. It just hits HARD live.

Tuxedo Rap, I think... and when Double K was rapping to our section later in the concert, I held out my hand, and he just shouted "SACRAMENTO!" in the mic and gave me a pound.

Had some really good questions in there. Nice job Sac! Highly jealous. Haven't gotten to see the P yet. I'm gonna have to organize a Memphis street team and get a hold of a promoter so I can get them to my area. Memphis needs to see these discrete street poets

Sorry for almost a year reply to thread. lifes just been busy. In the video footage you can see me and SactownConnection on the far right side of the whole video. Im the one with the brown puts hoodie with the white tshirt around my neck and SactownConnection is right next to me.
