Posts: 15Posted 20 years ago #Whats up everyone, I was hoping someone could give some advice on recording to PC from my sampler. Basically I am experiencing a lot of hiss and nasty background noise when I try to record into my soundcard and I cant work out what it is. I dont think theres anything wrong with my setup as I can record from vinyl into the soundcard fine. I am using a Roland UA-100 USB card and recording from my ASR-X, as soon as I plug the X into the cards inputs its noise central, the outs on the sampler are fine when plugged straight into my monitors. As I say, the noise doesnt appear when monitoring eg my turntable thru a preamp and then into the card, only the sampler, is this something to do with DA converters or something? is the soundcard just not up to it? its been good to me in all other areas....any help would be greatly appreciated -

Posts: 15Posted 20 years ago #Any will do as long as you have a seperate phono preamp of some description, just run that to the line ins on your card, I did have one last year that had built in phono preammps, a Terratec card, was abosultely worthless and unsusable quality, I'd stick to a seperate mixer or preamp -

i had this problem when i first came into producing. i went out and got a soundcard that has "zero latency" this mean your nomal noise level is reduced so unwanted background hiss gets taken out.
some times background noise cant be avoided. ive got some wutang and jay-z acapellas on vinyl and the hissing on them its loud. and when you know the tone of the hiss and your here the proper version the hiss is still there in the background.
plugging in your sampler straight into your soundcard should work fine, but in your case it effects the sound quality.so i would advise that you get a mixer to plug ur sampler into and then from the record output on the mixer you plug in your soundcard.
use your software to the full. you can get compression and eq plugins for lots of software that will help you when it comes to EQing and mastering samples.
a lot of mcs that i have worked with in the passsed complained about quality of sound and compression etc, but they are missing the point...
its what you do with your sounds, not what equipment they were made on.
i spent some money on a mic pre amp and eq mixer just to prove a point that having all this gear dont make you a better mc or producer.

Posts: 15Posted 20 years ago #Hey, thanks for the advice, as far as I know the soundcard I have has pretty low latency, Im using ASIO drivers and have it down to like 5ms, its weird that its just the sampler that causes the problem but I might try and pick up a mixer as you suggest and see if that helps at all, its not just hiss, some kind of weird like digital noises as well...odd, anyways, I dont have a myspace, never set one up, isnt it owned by Murdoch or some ish now? I got some beats on http://www.soundclick.com/dfonic mostly just rough stuff, the Kool Keith remix is probably the closest to finished, my mixings not good...some ffedback would be cool thouhg -

You just plug in what you want to record, then you plug the interface into your PC's USB port.
