Posts: 8Posted 20 years ago #When i first got this sh!t i was so excited man, i played asap, liked the intro, real classic, but pass the 40, pumpin i wasnt feelin those. There are some hits on here for sure man, the best part id say is about 3 minutes into flex off youre rappin bout a black man brown man and hihop fans, and you change the beat a little. but anyway, i found myself just not feelin this album, and this sint ansult to you or mike, but i realized that you guys did something different on this album , it almost sounds faster or more louder/intense and not"laidback" which is what i was feelin about the P since i first heard you dudes. I could put your disc in, sit back and forget my troubles, but this cd makes you wanna move, which isnt bad, im gong ape over this cd its great, but i think next time you and double shoudl try an take it back to the basics, you know what i mean? hardly any horn samples on this cd. maybe just one track thats real jazzy and laidback, something like well be there or montego slay or stay home, you know? anyway i did like the album boys, and im sure itll grow on me, but i was a bit surpirsed to see you cats changing it up, i thouht you had it nailed perfectly with your jazzy, funky, soulful, horn filled beats. but times are a changing and i guess so are the P. -

Posts: 384Posted 20 years ago #also, the reason you didnt get another OST style albumn is because (thes said) OST was about hip hop, and the stepfather is about family, the chris and mike story up to date. so anyhow, i think your hearing the albumn, still on incorrect volume, but your not listening, give another go.

yea, if you aint feeling at least 5 of the hardest tracks on there, you aint listeningm your hearing but not listening.
its a different album but up to date about what they are and still going through.
I guess we aint used to it beacause hip hop hasnt had that mature family type feel to it. Its always about, "I AM SOOOOOOOOO HIP HOP, I BREAK DANCE AND WATCH KUNG-FU FLICKS AND BEAT BOX AT LUNCH" -

Posts: 17Posted 20 years ago #I sympathize with not feeling "pumpin" or "pass the 40". I didn't either. But the rest of the album is straight dope, with the same P feel. You can't expect an artist to do the same thing over and over, change is a vital part of music and Mike & Chris showed how it's done here.
Also, for some reason I always hate new albums from an artist I know on first listen. You always look back and compare to other stuff without recognizing the new sh!t that's being brought to the table. Catch me in a few months and I'll probably be blasting the tracks I'm not feeling right now up in my headphones and loving it. -

I´d rather say those 2 tracks come to early in the running order... na mean?
IMO they rather should have come like for track 10 and 11.
Imagine someone listening through the album at the record store....
If I don´t know the P I´d check through the first 4 tracks and THOSE tracks are not _really_ repping the actual P sound... na mean?
well.. it´s done now.. so you can´t change it now..
anyway.. the album is dope. thx -

the other day i went back to the next step and songs like the turndown, tim to rock our sh!t, san francisco knights, wannabes, those were simple, mellow laid back beats, and i understnad stepfather isnt like that as its not abouty hip hop and the hi phop lifestyle, its about family and friends, and more serious matters, but i hope thes and double k go back and make another records just tellin stories on the songs with easy, dope beats, something you can chill too. but everything changes, and if you go and read the forward in ost, puts are trying to bring it back, and hopefully they do. no diss to stepfather, there are some great tracks on there, but i cant wait to hear the other tracks they recorded for it when they put them out. -

Posts: 3,618Posted 20 years ago #jamboree is a chill track! it's killer. LA9X the beat is fresh! plus all the last 6 tracks are bangers. More Than You Know has horns dude and Pumpin, i just love the intro that track is dope.
It will grow on you - there's an album I have which even after listening to it 10 times I hated but after I learned / understood what it was about and what it meant at the time it was made I was feeling it a lot more and I rock out to it. -

Posts: 349Posted 20 years ago #I have to say I think the album is great. Certainly the best this year so far. I'm probably a bit biased but this is a PUTS board so I'm bound to be, but I seriously think the album will be regarded as a classic.
The lyrics are varied and on point. The beats are superb from start to finish, even when they vary 'the P sound' a bit but the most impressive thing for me is how the whole thing flows from start to finish so well. The tracks melt into one another and its just incredible to sit back for 70 odd minutes and be transported.
And like Thes said, it needs to played LOUD! because only then do you hear the subtle touches and little samples hidden amongst the layers of production.
My favourite track changes every damn day. It was LA9X then Jamboree but now it's On & On and tomorrow it might be You! So many great tracks.
And maybe the sequencing of the 2 songs in question (Pass The 40 & Pumpin') at the beginning of the album was intended to get new fans at the listening posts of HMV's, Virgin, etc who buy albums based on the vibe of the first few tracks.
And anyone who says 'Pass The 40' is 'experimental' is mad. Its rhyming over a drum machine with ill cuts for chrissake! It doesn't get any more back to basic hip-hop than thatll!!!!!!
