No doubt.. If I could take only one piece of gear to a deserted island, it would be my 6008. I wouldn't even take the 3000. damn. hows that for loyalty. But, I made crazy sh!t with that little sampler (ie. Slow bullet) before I ever had a MPC 3000 so, I guess it's only right. Out here it was the oficial chollo house party mixer, why? because you could plug in TWO mics. The only thing better for that was the Gemini with the built in sound effects (bomb dropping, machine gun etc.)

Posts: 11Posted 21 years ago #All that software is so expensive because they're trying to recoup their development money on the few people/companies out there that actually pay retail price for their software. Most of the time they're not trying to get over on people. Those guys make their money on professional companies that buy like 50 licenses of Photoshop at a time for 1000$ a pop--not on people like us. Still it make you wonder why they wouldn't come out with a cheaper version with some limited capabilities (or maybe they do? i donno)
If funny, it's like a catch 22. If no one bootlegged thier software, they could probably sell it for 100$ each, but since people enevitably will, they have to charge like 10x. Which is why people bootleg it to begin with.. -

The sampler is the sh!t but doesn't have much memory. instead of blowing my tax refund on memory cards i hooked my mixer up to the sp-303 and the 303 to a computer for storage. so i would record my music from the 303 to the computer and delete it off my sampler so i can start a new project. Yesterday the computer crashed and deleted about 2 years of work, i pretty much hate life. -

Posts: 7Posted 21 years ago #K, i kno this is my first post and havent even introduced my goofy self yet, but i read through this whole thread and wouldnt mind droppin a little of my own knowledge on the newer forms of sampling available....
First i make beats just about everyday and im ever-growing and trying to expand my knowledge of arrangement and techniques all the way from patterns to engineering....I love it ALL....I feel as an artist u really can never simply stop growing and getting better at yer craft so in that repsect - im a loooooong ass way off from where i want to be - anyways, thats another story.
SO to begin, i started out fiddling with my popps music gear as a little kid and remember asside from taking guitar lessons and having an immense amount of music gear simply sitting there at my fingertips, all crammed inside our living room, None of that stuff really had an ultimate appeal to me till my dad bought this quarky sh!t drum machine back in the day to 4-track synthetic beats over his guitar and vocals after he was inbetween drummers in his band.
When popps wasnt around i started messing with the BOSS..lol....and thats how it began....
Bummer iz: i never had any scratch to build with and start accumulating the gear i planned to buy in the future...ie. an MPC, and some tables....
Then the day this amazing Software came out called Reason was what changed my perspective for good.
Until that day, i was completely convinced that analog/outboard gear was the only tru way to create amazing music and compositions on the fly, well i was wrong....
This software is just as capable of working off an initial loop, just as Thes described....(given that u copped a descent soundcard for yer computer that has plenty of routing capabilities....)
U work in virually the same way as Thes described, but then u transfer that audio to the computer rather then the Numark.
Dam,!.....I could go on forever, but i think ima have to cut since i still never got to my real point, whatever that was to start!?...haha.....
If anyone wants to hear more of my ramble - jus say go, otherwise, i dont blame u:-)

how do you pitch shift, tune on the 303? I had one about a year n half ago, before all that madlib hype. Could never findout how to tune the samples. Only way I got it to loop at a specific bpm was to time stretch it and you know what that does... ye made my sample complete stuttering garbage. Anyways, let us in. Im thinking about spending my tax return on one of them -

some classic, well known and loved music has been released using real ghetto equipment. just use what you can get a hold of (no matter how nasty it may seem) and get into it. don't get caught up in people telling you that you need the latest this and that...
boss make some great little sampler/sequencers like the 303 and the 505 for a pretty good price. yeah and the dj mixers with inbuilt samplers are sweet too. -

ive got a 505 and ive got used to NOT pitch or tempo shifting for the same reasons you complained of - now i pitch it on the turntable (as much as a 1200 will allow) and the same for a drum break if necessary. like i said im used to it and it excersises your dj skills while you make beats! ive adopted a 'wasn't meant to be' attitude if i can't get it right using the decks. (for better or worse - admittedly its a limitation at times but thats all good)

I'm going to be getting a second hand 1200, but I'm not sure what I should be using as speakers, amp, etc. From what I understand, the signal turntables put out is not very powerful, so you can't drive speakers with it, so do I need to buy an amplifier to beef it up a bit or a mixer? What kinda amps do people own? Would an older 70's/80's amp be good enough?
